Practice History

The present practice started when Roy Wise joined Mannie Stein, the first vascular surgeon in Durban. Together they did most of the vascular surgery in Durban and ran the vascular service at Addington hospital. Harold Duncan joined the practice shortly thereafter and it has been strengthened by the addition of John Strachan and Craig Campbell. Johan Blignaut joined the practice in 2010 followed by Bob Mills.

Mr Roy Wise

Roy Wise was initially trained by Aubrey Radford and Lawrence V. Pearson who was a legendary figure in thyroid surgery. Following that he worked with Norman Tanner at Balham Hospital, London, Prof Ian Aird at the Hammersmith Post graduate hospital and with Prof Allan Kark at the Durban Medical School.

He is a registered vascular surgeon, and apart from vascular surgery his main interests are head and neck, abdominal surgery and medico-legal reports. He qualified at Wits University and holds both fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England. In the late nineties he was appointed Honorary surgeon to HM Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Durban and subsequent to that of Al Gore. In 2009 his services were recognized by the Association of Surgeons of South Africa when he was awarded a Distinguished Service Award.

Mr Johan Blignaut

Johan Blignaut qualified at the University of the Orange Free State and then continued his career abroad, working in England, Ireland and Canada. He completed his post graduate surgical training in Durban, working under Prof Sandie Thomson. He has a keen interest in minimal access surgery such as  laparoscopic surgery and radio frequency ablation of varicose veins. Other keen surgical interests include breast and bariatric surgery.

Outside of medicine he enjoys golf and spending time with his wife Lize, and daughters Calista and Natalie.
